The central region of Sri Lanka, also now a slow-paced area comprised mostly of rural villages, was once the island’s epicentre, the ruling spot of ancient kings also and the home of their palaces and fortresses. Moreover, the Cultural Triangle is defined as the space between Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and Anuradhapura which, when connected on a map, forms a triangle (hence the name). However, it encompasses extensive archaeological ruins now protected by UNESCO as World Heritage sites, including highlights such as Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the city of Polonnaruwa, which provide a fascinating glimpse into the island’s history which dates back to the 4th century BC. Sri Lanka’s ancient kings developed remarkably advanced civilisations with some truly astonishing feats of engineering and constructed elaborately-decorated buildings in beautiful designs, many of which remain standing.
