Minneriya National Park is located in the northern Central Plains of Sri Lanka. While, July to October is the best period to visit the park due to the renowned gathering of Wild Elephant herds; also during the dry season – from August to September -, herds up to 300 Elephants are seen within a few square kilometres of the vast Minneriya Reservoir amidst the national park.

Furthermore, the park is also home to 24 species of mammals, over 160 species of Birds, and 25 species of Reptiles. It is possible to visit the park all year round. The best time to visit Minneriya National Park is in the dry season from July to October with its peak in August and September. The Elephants gather together more than 300 around the water reservoir due to the lack of water. Frequently, the males are only around during the breeding season in June – July.
The Minneriya National Park is home to 24 different types of mammals, including more than 300 Elephants, 160 species of birds, 25 species reptiles including the painted-lip lizard, saltwater crocodile, Indian python, Asian water monitor, 26 species of fish and Over 75 species of butterflies live in this park as well!

Rainfalls of 1,500–2,000 millimetres can occur throughout the year. During May it is decreasing rainfall while June to September is the driest months. It’s often overcast from June to August. The minimum temperature and highest of the park are 20.6 °C (69.1 °F) and 34.5 °C (94.1 °F) respectively.
