Capital: Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Colombo
Government: Republic
Currency: Sri Lankan rupee (LKR)
The currency of Sri Lanka is the rupee (Rs), which is divided into 100 cents, although it is rare to find prices in cents. There are coins of 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees. The notes are in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 rupees.
Money changers are present in Colombo and in the main tourist locations. Moreover, they offer competitive rates, but choose them carefully because it’s easy to be scammed. However, our advice is to exchange currency only in banks or at the most reliable money changers, such as those at the airport. ATMs are still the safest and most reliable solution.
